UNIDAD

Queerness is not yet here. Queerness is an ideality. Put another way, we are not yet queer. We may never touch queerness, but we can feel it as the warm illumination of a horizon imbuded with potentiality. We have never been queer, yet queerness exists for us as an ideality that can be distilled from the past and used to imagine a future. The future is queerness’s domain.

A letter from UNIDAD

Dear friends,

First of all, we are saddened to hear that Jose Esteban Munoz, prominent queer theorist and SLC alumn, has passed away. Let his soul rest in peace and his life and words be remembered.
As some of you have likely noticed, we have stopped meeting weekly over the last month or so of the semester. We, as co-chairs, are reevaluating the format of UNIDAD, and may abandon the weekly meeting format all together in favor of assuming an identity more as a collective, event planning, or other sort of group. Stay tuned and thank you for your support and past attendance, and let us know if you have any ideas or comments regarding this. If there are enough people that really want weekly meetings to remain, they can continue, but we sense that this is not the case after (literally) years of fairly low turnout.
Please also follow our friends and colleagues that are the Dangers of a Single Narrative (DOASN) Collective and the discussions they are having and prompting. It should go without saying that you don’t have to agree with their opinions, but they are putting forth and starting important dialogues that you as students on this campus need to be aware of and not avoid in willful ignorance or apathy.

And lastly, we encourage you to read an extremely important and well done article on the state of education, specifically here at Sarah Lawrence, written by former SLC student Ella Mahony for SLCspeaks.

We hope you all are surviving the conference season and completing work you are proud of and invested in!

See you next semester,

UNIDAD, Co-Chairs Audrey & Jomana

On her way to the Black Hills powwow this past weekend Asia Black Bull, (Lakota/Korean) a jingle dress dancer and current Miss Teen Rosebud from the Rosebud Rez, and her family stopped to pick out a Halloween costume. When she came across… the “Indian princess” costume, she took offense and stated, “I am not a Halloween Costume!” You certainly are not. Keep dancing and representing your Oyate you make us proud and help to show the world that we are more than costume.
